What is TDS Return Filing?

TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) is a system where tax is deducted before making certain payments such as salaries, contractor payments, rent, professional fees, commission, or interest.

After deducting the tax, the deductor must deposit it with the government and submit a TDS Return. This return contains details of the amount deducted, the person from whom tax was deducted, and the tax deposited.

The information filed through the TDS Return allows the deductee to claim tax credit while filing their Income Tax Return.

Who Needs to File TDS Returns?

TDS Return Filing is required for every person or organization that deducts tax at source.

This generally includes

  • Private Limited Companies
  • LLPs
  • Partnership Firms
  • Sole Proprietors (where applicable)
  • Government Departments
  • Trusts
  • Educational Institutions
  • Banks
  • Employers paying salaries
  • Businesses making payments that attract TDS

If you have a TAN (Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number) and deduct TDS, filing quarterly returns is mandatory.

Types of TDS Return Forms

Different TDS forms are used depending on the nature of the payment.

Purpose

Form 24Q

TDS on Salary

Form 26Q

TDS on Payments Other Than Salary
